Hello! I’m Nostalgia. I just released my newest product, “Chord Ear Training Test for Guitarists“.
It’s the perfect series of MP3s to train your ear so you could start playing songs just by listening to it! I have released a free video test on Youtube that you can check out below!
How Did I Get Here?
A short intro about me, I took music all through school, played various melodic instruments then, along with piano where I simply learned songs. I could read music, but never got to dig into theory. I picked up guitar as an adult and I’ve been playing actively for almost 3 years now.
I’m most interested in Japanese music, and since I was young, I always wondered why it sounded different. Guitar made theory easy to apply and understand and it was an opportunity to dig deeper into chords and chord progressions. It was quite easy to understand western music theory, but it didn’t take long to see that I could not create Japanese sounding music through it, so I dug deeper and answered that question for others on my blog.
Now that I have a pretty good foundation on guitar when it comes to chords, and I also understand progressions and songwriting a lot more, I wanted to work on my listening skills. I wanted to be able to learn songs by ear, and figure out what chord was being played within a few seconds. Off to Youtube I go…
Looking For Training Material
I found a couple videos that was what I really needed, you know, it plays the chord a couple times then tells you the answer, but that was all I could find. Other listening tests focused on intervals, on discerning if a chord was major or minor, or they would throw diminished, augmented, and 7ths into the mix.
While I understand the benefits of the other videos, I just want something that will test me on basic chords. It would also be nice for a chord to replay more than twice and give me a bit more time to figure it out since I found myself pausing and rewinding the ones I found. Guess I’ll have to make it myself…
Creating The Perfect Chord Test
I have a video up on Youtube for beginners who just want to train their ears to figure out the major and minor chords of the 7 main notes (A to G). You’ll have about 20 seconds to figure out each chord. I play the chord 3 times, followed by a break to allow you to sound it out on your instrument, then I play it one more time before revealing the answer.
