The day has come and gone….and wow. It’s crazy to finally bring my middle school band dream to life, but just goes to show if you’re serious about something, you’ll do whatever you need to to make it happen.
My friend, Dolly Momoiro, who used to plan and host things with her organization, Toronto Harajuku Style, decided she was going to bring Idol Revolution back after 3 years. It was a surprise as she previously claimed retirement, but I also knew she did enjoy it haha. In August, she told me about it and I asked if my band. She said sure! ;____;
The band only had 2 solid songs at that point, Uragiri no Yuuyake and Shunkan Sentimental, which we’ve been practicing since last year. We were also working a lot on Lost One’s Weeping, but I knew we wouldn’t have it down in time. We start Haruka Kanata in June but it’s not hard and I think we were all familiar, so I recommended that, along with a short version of Sunny Day for You (Tada Kimi ni Hare) which we’ve brushed across, simply cause it was still summer time.
Since we just finished up with the Pretty Heroes convention on August 14, I also recommended we take a couple weeks off, enjoy our weekends, review all the songs, etc, and we could come together in September, giving us only 2 weeks to rehearse the set. Crazy but, I had hope in us haha. They can be slow and forgetful, but I found out this summer they work best under pressure, so if they wanted pressure…here it is 😛
Rehearsals were pretty fun. After we ran through the songs a bit, I would chant and scream for the other guys. I’m not the fan girl type, but I’ve been to a few of these events to know what kind of audience will be there, so I wanted to prepare them for distractions the best I could. If you’re not ready for that, you’ll probably laugh or it’ll throw you off. I’m always thinking ahead XD
Pre-Show Setup
Anyways, the guys gave us a ride. Got there around 5:30, as we had to do sound check. The sound guy in helping us set up our amps and balance volumes. After that, they said we were going first. I pitched going first at Pretty Heroes just because it’s a lot faster to set down than it is to set up, but was slightly hoping we wouldn’t go first this time. Not because of nerves, but would be a nice change of pace if everyone else was dancing.
Right after they told us the order, my mom called. She worked that day, but got a ride home and was washing up to head over. If the show was starting 7 as planned, she wouldn’t have made it. She was upset with me saying she was really looking forward to it and I’m like it’s not in my hands ^^””””. As people were coming in though, an act or two cancelled, so I asked Dolly if we could push the start a bit, as Chu’s mom had yet to enter the building as well, and she said that was fine ;_______;
It was nice that all of us was able to bring some people in, family, friends and coworkers, friends of friends, etc. I loved getting to meet all of them. Always fun seeing what other people’s closest ones think of em lol Also nice getting some freshair on the patio beforehand, which is where we took this pic.
Our Big Moment
Then it was our time on. I was unusually cool as a cucumber. Not nervious, not super excited, no real adrenaline pumping, just chill. Considering this was the last thing on my childhood bucketlist, you’d probably expect me to be more intense but naw.
Not sure if my anxious school performing days are behind me, or because I had these songs down pact, or just being in a familiar place with really chill people, but it was chill. I guess in my head it was more like, “I’m ready for this, let me be the foundation my band needs and do what I always do”. Freaking out will only make you mess up more.
The set, went surprisingly well. Not that I had doubts, but considering we only had two rehearsals, I only had my last for reference. Chu’s energy was high, Ptollemy remembered his lines, Norman’s solos were pretty good, so no real complaints ^^ Our first song, Haruka Kanata, was a big hit with the audience haha.
Afterwards, I got to talk to a lot of our guests. Since they knew we were rookies and this was our first gig, I got a few “I wasn’t expecting much, but you guys did surprisingly well!” Like….thanks? ^^” jkjk If anything, it’s better the bar was set low so we can surprise them.
This was the first time really hearing our group mixed well, good acoustics and well, and even I’m like…damn, it actually sounds like the song. We only have 3 instruments and a drum track, so it’s a little surprisingly honestly.
Anyways, I enjoyed the rest of the night, watching fellow performers RCVDE, THS.Go!, and Dolly performing her own original song. Also just enjoyed chatting it up with some guests between breaks. Afterwards, I even got to meet another host, for OniGirls, who said we should totally play for them. Also met the organizer of KawaiiBass, which I promoted in a previous article on otaku events in the GTA. Small world eh?
All in all, had a wonderful day. The weather said rain and thunderstorms, but it only rained in the morning so it didn’t get in the way of people coming out.
Glad we left a good impression ^_^ Happy people want us back. Hoping to cover new songs by then!
Nostalgia~
UPDATE DECEMBER 2024: “No Longer Dreaming” Published!
If you’re a beginner or inexperienced musician who wants to break out in this competitive field, check out my new eBook! I started this blog when I was still a rookie guitarist with no experience, but with confidence and a plan, I created a band and we performed at a venue, conventions, and a festival in the span of 2 years.
As a solo musician, I’ve played for a church, got to be part of a high production music video, and was offered to perform at a huge event and play on an album. In this guide book, you’ll learn how to choose your style, niche & target audience, what to practice, how to find bandmates and organize rehearsals, how to promote yourself and/or your band, where to look for gigs, how to dress for photoshoots and the stage, how to network with people, and so much more!
