Anime & Chritianity Unite: List Of Christian Content By Otakus, For Otakus

Are you a Christian who loves Japan, anime, Jpop music, and all things otaku? While it sounds like a weird combination, we’re actually a pretty big community. And while it may sound weirder to combine the two, you’d actually be surprised at how the tropes or characters in anime could make us a better Christian, and even push us to be bold, courageous, and confident in our faith.

Nostalgia here! I grew up in a Christian household but also grew up watching anime on TV. After hearing the original Japanese opening for Digimon in middle school, I started to dig deep into Jpop music. Even though there weren’t many black anime fans, let alone black female fans, I was never ashamed of my interest because I loved the stories and lessons anime taught me. I personally really looked up to Kari/Hikari from Digimon because she was so loving, caring, and sacrificial, so pure that she had the crest of light.

As an adult, I had a childhood band dream that was unfulfilled, so I picked up guitar to pursue that dream. Animes like K-ON!! really inspired me as Yui was also a beginner but was able to be part of a band and perform not long after. This whole blog, Chromatic Dreamers, was made for people like me who are beginner musicians but who want to perform or be part of a band, so I documented the whole journey here. I also dug long and hard to understand why Japanese music sounds the way it does, and I created one of the first ebooks and courses on Japanese music theory. And of course, I made the dream happen and my anime cover band got to perform at a couple conventions and even a Japanese festival here in Toronto, Canada!

Chromatic Dreamers Gimme Mochi On Stage

But as I neared the end of 2022, someone close to me revealed that they were spiritual, and only then did I really look into the realities of the spiritual world and how demons operate. It was a big wake up call and I ran back to God seriously. I grew up in a false denomination that focused on works, but only then did I really count the weight of my sins and realized I couldn’t save myself. I decided to trust Jesus alone and I was truly born again.

Since then, I’ve been on fire for Jesus. I realized not long after just how much Shinto and Buddhist influences were in the shows and music I watched, so I’ve stepped away from a lot of it and have been cautious of the media I consume. I’ve also gone to a couple churches to find one that I align with, and have had the priviledge to serve with my musical talents, both at these small churches who lacked musicians, and even being part of a gospel music video! But best of all, I was able to finally find Japanese Christian artists that had the chord progressions and vibe I’ve always loved!

There’s a reason we are drawn to certain things. While anime is certainly not the purest medium (and I go in depth about why it can be unsafe to Christians), it has many redeeming qualities. For one, compared to Western content, it isn’t caught up in the pursuit of money, fame, love/sex, nor glorifies violence and pride. Does it have those things? Yes. But I find that many stories focus on more relatable and humbling topics, such as pursuing a goal or dream even when you suck, about teamwork and friendship and valuing each other’s strengths, about standing out, protecting the weak, and fighting for what is right. If not for anime, I definitely wouldn’t be the empathetic, courageous, and driven person I am today.

So now I’m here to create a list for the anime and Jpop fans of the West. This list is focused on English Christian content that is catered towards anime lovers. This could be manga or anime based on bible stories or an original story that honours and promotes Christian values, it could be a blog, podcast, or channel that talks about the Christian lessons in anime or helps to determine if it is safe to watch, or even just an Instagram/TikTok account creating funny or encouraging reels and memes that otakus can relate to. I have opted to skip video game related content as Gaming & God already covers that.

DISCLAIMER: Since I personally don’t indulge in secular content anymore nor keep up with anime trends, I won’t be reading/watching the content listed below to give a thorough assessment, but I have screened the platforms producing the material to ensured that their mission is to serve God and share the gospel. I will also say that we’re all on different levels of our faith journey. Some would rather keep holy things holy, while others don’t mind bringing Christianity into secular circles to try to reach the lost. I’m personally cautious as I don’t want to compromise and create confusion, but I also understand that Paul became all things to all people that he might save some (1 Corinthians 9:20-22). I know God can use anything and anyone to touch others, and I have personally learned a lot of positive lessons like love, friendship, empathy, sacrifice, forgiveness, and standing up for my beliefs through anime, so I’m not against these efforts. As always, pray and use discernment when indulging in any kind of content. My mission with this article is to simply share what’s out there and help others find like minded people and safe content to enjoy~

Finding God In Anime (Devotional)

Website | Instagram

““What if we wrote an anime-inspired devotional?” That was the question I (Moriah) had asked Laura one day. After praying for some time and asking the Lord how I could use my passion for anime for Him, the idea popped into my mind. Initially, I said, “Um, wow, that’s a great idea. But how could I possibly write all those devotionals alone?” That was when Laura messaged me, asking if I had ever thought about writing some kind of anime anthology. From there, the ship sailed! Together, we created what you see now: Finding God in Anime.

“We can’t be the only otaku finding God in our favorite shows.” And Laura was totally right! So many wonderful authors came to us with their own experiences. They shared how God had used anime to open their eyes or strengthen their hearts. Through the submissions of many talented authors, Laura and I were able to pull together an anthology with a wide variety of animes and featuring devotional themes that just hit home.”

Chromatic Dreamers (Me!)

Website | Facebook | Instagram | Youtube

As mentioned in the intro to this article, my blog was initially focused on Japanese music and tips for beginner musicians and bands. Having come back to my faith in full strength, I’ve started making articles catered towards Japanese Christians and Christian anime fans. Some articles that may be worth checking out are: “12 Anime Tropes That Made Me A Better Christian“, “The Ultimate List of Japanese Christian Artists“, “Japanese Christian Alternatives for Jpop Fans“, and “Is Anime/Jpop Safe For Christians?“. I’ve also conducted interviews with Between The Tangles and Gaming & God on this list.

Gaming & God

Website | Facebook | Instagram | Twitch

“The purpose of Gaming and God is to bridge the gap between gamers and God, discovering spiritual truths in the games we play. The church can be a rough place for gamers or those who are into geeky hobbies (anime, cosplay, D&D, board games, streaming, etc). Many are looked at as “childish” or immature, but that is not always the case. Those stereotypes of a lonely kid in his basement are gone; video games are global and are played by billions of people.”

“This is not a blog I keep updated just to make entertaining content for. The core is to see people come to know God for themselves, repent of their sins, and know Christ as their Savior. To that end, I have curated many resources that. There are benefits to play, including making friends, relieving stress, solving puzzles, learning about culture, and some games have the player accomplishing morally good tasks. Those actions in-game can translate over to real life since they can be a positive influence. The same goes for negatively influencing games, but that’s why I want to showcase games that are helpful and not harmful more than not.”

Geek Devotions

“We strive to be a voice of light in a community that is often shunned and ignored by the church. This past year we expanded into podcasts and partnering with other geeky ministries which have given us the opportunity to reach out and love on hundreds of people locally here in Shreveport, LA, all the way to the UK and Australia! We have received several e-mails and various social media messages from people telling us how they appreciate that we are speaking their language (Geek) and how what we do has encouraged, inspired, and challenged them.”

“Hi I’m Jess aka CocoSensei! I do anime related content, reviews, and occasionally talk about Jesus! Cocosensei is just an outlet for me to be myself; authentically black, nerdy, yet love God. It’s a page to talk about the latest anime & manga, review shows to help put others onto peak, as well as showcase that Christians don’t have to be without joy & stuffy to truly have relationship with God. I attract Christians and non Christians alike and we all nerd out together. I initially started the channel to simply be anime only but God said add him in it. And he’s the reason why my page has been successful.”

“Behind that my name is Jess. I’m 31, divorced, & a single mom of 2. I’m not churchy but I grew up church adjacent. My mom worked and ran the theater department at a baptist church and my dad was an elder in C.O.G.I.C. I was always at church but not in the way other “church kids” were. I became a pastor’s kid when I was a teenager. My mom and step dad co pastor a nondenominational church together. And my father pastors a church as well. I grew up with knowledge of Jesus. I didn’t meet him personally until I was 18. Didn’t fully feel secure in my relationship until I was 26. I hope cocosensei does everything God has planned for it to do and touches everyone it’s supposed to touch. At the end of the day may God get the glory and others see his hand in my life.”

Key2Nostalgia (Me!)

Website | Facebook | Instagram | Youtube

“You can label my music as “Christian-Themed, Jpop Inspired BGMs (Background Music)“. Each song has a biblical title and an accompanying verse with the purpose of sharing the Christian experience. Christians have to have faith and hope even when life is falling apart, they have to stand up for what the bible says even when everyone around them says otherwise, they have to face persecution and still love their enemies, and there can be many moments of guilt, loneliness, pain and desperation. These are the kinds of topics general Christian and gospel music never really talk about, but I desire to share those feelings through my music, to create an anime-like soundtrack for my brothers and sisters. I also hope it will peak curiosity in non-Christians listeners who decide to read the inspiration and meaning behind each piece.”
