When I first discovered Japanese music in 2006, for the first 5 or 6 years, I was stuck listening to the 12 or so artists I found through anime theme songs. Without internet at home, I didn’t have the opportunity to really explore. Thankfully, with friends, the internet, and more recently Spotify, I was able to find more artists and music later on.
Sadly, Japan as a whole, still doesn’t put as much effort into promoting or catering to gaijin, but luckily for you, there’s people like me who loves to spread it.
I have a whole load of useful Japanese Music articles on my Japanese Music Learning Resources Page, including Where To Listen & Buy Japanese Music and Why Does Japanese Music Sounds Different?
Feel free to check out my Japanese sampler playlists on Youtube so you can get a feel for genres and discover new artists.
And if you’re interested in learning more vocabulary and kanji so you can watch anime and dramas, read manga, sing J-pop at karaoke, or play raw Japanese video games, check out my 250+ Kanji for Japanese Media (+Sentences) article and my Japanese Study Guide!
