250+ Common Words in Japanese Music Lyrics

I’ve been listening to Japanese music since 2006 and the music is why I decided to start learning Japanese in high school. I wanted to understand what they were saying without having to look it up.

There’s a lot of words I hear being used quite often, so I decided to make a list of common words so you can better understand the songs the first time you hear it!

I find Japanese music is a lot more expressive and quite abstract, where as Western music is more direct and straightforward. There’s a lot of songs that have hidden meanings, so even if you directly translate it, you may not fully grasp it as well as a Japanese person would. It doesn’t help that they may use happy songs to talk about dark subjects (think YOASOBI, Vocaloid).

Adding on, thanks to anime, there’s a lot of words one may hear in songs but may not use while speaking formally, such as yuuki (courage), kimochi (feelings), sekai (world/universe), chikara (power/strength) and tatakai (fight). Thus, these words are harder to find as they may not be on ‘most common words’ list.

The list is arranged alphabetically by the romanji to make words you hear easier to find. This list also contains kanji if you’re someone who aims to be a karaoke master one day!

I added some conjugations if I hear it quite often or more often than the regular verb, (ie wasurata – I forgot, kaete – go home, dekinai – I can’t do it) but otherwise, knowing the root will help you identify it.

I decided to forgo borrowed words as one can usually figure out the meaning if the read it outloud a couple times. This list would be twice as long as there are quite a lot of borrowed words (ie kisu – kiss, kamera-camera, sutoori-story).

Japanese Lyric Dictionary Music Anime

If you familiarize yourself with these words, I can guarantee you’ll be able to understand about 75% of any song the first time you hear it. It’s not that Japanese is easy, but even in English music, a lot of people like to use the same words (ie. money, love, tomorrow, sing).

Be sure to bookmark this list as it will come in handy. If you’re looking for more words, I created a Japanese Lyric Dictionary with 650+ common and uncommon words that you’ll see a lot in Japanese music.

I also have a few other articles you may be interested in, such as the Japanese Music Terminology Dictionary, Japanese Music Phrases, and Learn Japanese Through Music Lyrics.

If you have yet to learn Japanese and are wondering if it’s worth it, read “How A Little Japanese Helps You Explore J-Music“. And for a non-Japanese language musical article, check out “Japanese Song Structure“.

And if you’re interested in learning more vocabulary and kanji so you can watch anime and dramas, read manga, sing J-pop at karaoke, or play raw Japanese video games, check out my 250+ Kanji for Japanese Media (+Sentences) article and my Japanese Study Guide!

  6. I’m surprised “Mayonaka” isn’t on this list. I hear it in so many classic J-pop tunes.
It means “midnight” or “dead of night”

    1. I was about to say “You’re right!” and rushed to ensure I at least included it in my Japanese lyric Dictionary.
I made that almost 2 years ago, so I won’t remember every word that I included back then, but thankfully it was already in there ^_^
It has over 650 common Japanese words that I found from songs. If you’re interested, it’s available in my ko-fi shop!
